Rationalizing the use of caesarean section in Egypt through implementing 10 group Classification system

- Caesarean section status in Egypt

Egypt has the third highest worldwide caesarean section (CS) rate following the Dominican Republic (56.4%) and Brazil (55.6%) (7) The most recent official Egypt Demographic and Health Survey (EDHS) was in 2014 and showed that 52% of childbirths in Egypt are by CS, an estimated 1,350,000 CS/year In fact, the annual number of CS in Egypt is higher than that in the USA (1.2 million 2018) despite the latter having 3.5x higher population than Egypt.(7) this rate was very alarming as it is almost double that reported at the time of the 2008 EDHS (28 %) and 2.5 times the level observed at the time of the 2005 EDHS (19.9 %) . this is the highest rate in the MENA region which is more than double that of Jordan and Saudi Arabia, and more than 4 times that of Kuwait. Egypt’s regional neighbors ( 8 ). This very high rate of cs and its sharp increasing trend indicates that these rates have virtually nothing to do with evidence-based medicine and this was given as example of unnecessary cs in FIGO position paper on the rise of cs .(9)
