Treatment depends on the type of stroke and the time elapsed since symptom onset. It commonly includes:
Medication: One or more medications may be administered. Some are given immediately and for a short period, such as anticoagulants, while others may be required long term. When stroke is diagnosed promptly, an intravenous thrombolytic may be administered to restore blood flow to the affected area of the brain; it must be used within the first three to four hours after symptom onset.
Surgery/Endovascular Treatment: Some patients may require clot removal to restore cerebral blood flow. A catheter is inserted into an artery, usually through the groin, and a small device is advanced through the catheter to the affected cerebral artery.
This procedure is generally performed within the first six hours after onset of acute stroke symptoms.
Rehabilitation: Some patients require long-term rehabilitation, including physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, psychological support, nutritional management, and bladder management.
