Hordeolum affecting glands of Zies and Moll usually termed external hordeolum, while that affecting meibomian gland (meibomitis) is termed as internal hordeolum, Involvement of multiple glands is common The microorganism is usually Staphylococcus aureus. Termed meibomitis, meibomian or tarsal adenitis, or marginal blepharitis
Symptoms
1- Small solitary abscess or multiple abscesses at the lid margin. The infection will “point” and may erupt spontaneously.
2- variable erythema and swelling of the eyelid margins, pruritus, pain, chemosis, and purulent conjunctivitis

4- Internal hordeolum is characterized by presence of small painful abscess at the inner surface of the eyelid near the lid margin.
Treatment

2. Softening of the skin over the abscess by warm compresses contains sodium bicarbonate.
3. Incision of the abscess and evacuation of its content.
4. Rubbing of antibiotic ointment to the lid margin.
5. Systemic antibiotic therapy and topical antibiotic-corticosteroid administration are required. Without culture and sensitivity data or while waitingfor these results, administration of amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, doxycycline, or a cephalosporin
6. If there are recurrences, injection of staphylococcus toxoid is of value.
