Prolonged
recumbency leads to:

necrosis of large
hindquarter muscles
- Peripheral
nerve damage due to
compression
- Compartment‑like
syndromes from
intramuscular pressure
The
extent of secondary damage strongly predicts survival. Up to 70% can
recover if secondary lesions are minimized.
