- Health Education for Parents of Sick Children

Providing health education to parents of sick children in the hospital is essential for equipping them with important information that aids in their child’s recovery and disease prevention, both during hospitalization and after discharge. This reflects the hospital’s commitment to educating the child's family on the following:

  • The child's medical diagnosis.
  • Diagnostic tests, examinations, and treatments.
  • Medication usage and possible side effects.
  • Nutrition.
  • Physical therapy and rehabilitation.
  • Information on reducing disease risks through proper nutrition.
  • Discharge instructions and follow-up care.

Objective:

To improve healthcare outcomes by educating parents on how to support their child's recovery and promote healthy behaviors through the provision of medical information across various specialties relevant to the child’s condition.

Procedures:

  • According to the Code of Medical Ethics No. 238 of 2003, health education for patients and their families is a fundamental responsibility of doctors and the medical team.
  • The treating physician and nursing staff use a dedicated record or form for educating the child's family.
  • The medical team, including the treating physician and nurses, assesses the child's health condition and determines the educational needs of the family.
  • Any department participating in educational sessions documents the session, including signatures and the date, in the patient’s educational record.
  • If abbreviations are used, an explanation should be provided to ensure clarity.
  • The medical team ensures that the educational record includes details of the information provided, the family’s response, and a summary of the educational session.
  • The medical team ensures that any department involved in the educational process includes its specific educational forms in the patient’s record.
  • The medical team provides opportunities for parents to ask questions and ensures their understanding of discharge instructions and follow-up steps, which must be documented in the child’s file.
  • The hospital provides a designated space for educational sessions for parents in waiting areas and outpatient clinics.
  • The hospital commits to providing standardized educational materials on the importance of breastfeeding, weaning stages, and common infectious diseases.

Responsible Personnel:

  • The treating physician.
  • Nursing staff in the department.
  • Healthcare providers from any department participating in patient education.

Forms:

  • Patient and Family Health Education Form.
