Definition:
It is a procedure done to know the blood sugar level
Most exposed people:
Diabetics.
The team in charge.
Nursing team.
Tools:
Glucose analyzer - Test strips with the same code as the device - Sterile cotton or gauze - Lancets - Alcohol - Latex gloves.
Steps:
1- Wash hands
2- Explain the procedure to the patient
3- Put on gloves, hold the patient's finger down and squeeze gently
4- Wipe your fingertip with a cotton ball dipped in alcohol and prick your finger with a swab
5- Place the end of the strip or the designated place on the strip to place the blood drop
6- Press the finger with cotton until the bleeding stops
7- Dispose of waste in the designated place
8- The nursing staff records the blood sugar level on the special form and gives the insulin dose according to the doctor’s orders

Policy:
· Severe high blood sugar, acetone in the urine, and symptoms of acetone in the central nervous system.
Signs and symptoms:
1. Pale face
2. Disturbance in the degree of consciousness
3. The mouth has a foul odor of acetone (the smell of rotten apples)
4. Increased urine output
5. General dryness
6. General weakness of the body
7. Stomach pain and frequent vomiting
8. Deterioration in the percentage of salts in the body
9. Increased blood acidity
Steps:
1. Dealing with patients with diabetic ketoacidosis by performing a blood sugar test repeatedly every hour or according to the doctor’s orders
2. The doctor will be informed of the result
3. Blood gases are performed on the patient according to the doctor’s instructions to determine the acidity of the blood and the level of ketones in the blood.
4. Giving the patient insulin according to the test result and the doctor's instructions.
5. Compensating the patient with solutions according to the doctor's instructions
6. Observe the patient's level of consciousness and note any deterioration in the patient's level of consciousness
Determine the degree of acidity or alkalinity according to the following table
