- Anesthesia Complications

- General Surgical Complications

• Urinary retention (Urinary Retention).
• Wound infection (Wound Infection).
• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) (Deep Vein Thrombosis).

- Complications of Thoracic Surgery

A. Pulmonary Edema and Its Signs:

• Difficulty breathing (Dyspnea).
• Crackling and bubbling chest sounds (Crackle, Bubbling Sound of the Chest).
• Cyanosis (Bluish skin discoloration).
• Pink, frothy sputum (Pink, Frothy Sputum).
• These signs must be reported immediately to the attending physician.

B. Hypoxia and Its Signs:

• Restlessness (Restlessness).
• Increased heart rate (Tachycardia).
• Increased respiratory rate (Tachypnea).
• High blood pressure (Hypertension).

C. Post-Operative Bleeding and Its Signs:

• Increase in bloody drainage from the chest tube.
• Tachycardia (Increased heart rate).
• Hypotension (Low blood pressure).
• Anxiety (Feeling of distress).
• Restlessness.
• Pallor (Pale skin).
• Decreased hemoglobin levels.

D. Pneumonia and Its Signs:

• Lung collapse (Atelectasis).
• Fever.
• Changes in sputum color and consistency.

E. Cardiac Dysrhythmia and Its Signs:

• Heart attack (Myocardial Infarction).
• Heart failure.

F. Bronchopleural Fistula:

• Occurs due to a leak or disruption at the bronchial stump.
• Breathing difficulties.
• Sudden coughing with bloody fluid discharge.
• In such cases, the patient should be positioned on the operated side and may require a chest tube or surgical intervention.

- Complications of ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) Surgeries

1. Ear pain after tonsillectomy or adenoidectomy due to shared nerve pathways between the throat and ear.
2. Middle ear infection after tonsil or adenoid removal, requiring examination.
3. Bleeding:
• May occur within 24 hours due to suture loosening.
• Can happen after 5 days due to infection.
4. Facial muscle weakness.

- Complications of Tympanic Membrane Repair

• Facial nerve damage.
• Middle ear bone damage, leading to hearing loss.
• Dizziness.
• Incomplete healing of the eardrum.
• Moderate to severe hearing loss.
• Cholesteatoma (abnormal skin growth behind the eardrum).
• Severe ear infections.

- Complications of Hysterectomy (Uterus Removal)

1. Anesthesia-related issues, including coma, allergic reactions, or respiratory problems.
2. Wound infection.
3. Temporary bowel inactivity.
4. Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) due to prolonged bed rest.
5. Excessive bleeding during or after surgery.
6. Reduced sexual function or libido.
7. Abdominal pain or pain during intercourse.
8. Injury to nearby organs (bladder, intestines, or major blood vessels).
9. Accidental ureter ligation, potentially leading to kidney failure. (This occurs in 2.2%–3% of cases, depending on the surgical approach: abdominal, laparoscopic, or vaginal.)

- Complications of Cesarean Section

1. Chronic pelvic pain due to adhesions.
2. Small intestine adhesions.
3. Uterine bleeding.
4. Deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
5. Pulmonary embolism.

- Complications of Oophorectomy (Ovary Removal)

1. Surgical site infection.
2. Bleeding (localized, requiring intervention if severe).
3. Anesthesia risks, including severe allergic reactions and anaphylactic shock.
4. Intestinal injury due to proximity to the surgical site.
5. Bladder injury due to its closeness to the uterus and ovaries.
6. Ureter injury due to its proximity to the uterine artery (rare but possible).

- Complications of Mastectomy (Breast Removal)

1. General anesthesia risks, including nausea, vomiting, sore throat, headache, and temporary urinary retention.
2. Serious anesthesia risks, including heart attacks, strokes, and pneumonia.
3. Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) due to prolonged immobility.
4. Blood clots traveling to the lungs, causing shortness of breath and chest pain, which can be fatal.
5. Surgical site infection, requiring long-term antibiotics or additional surgery.
6. Bleeding, either during or after surgery, which may require a blood transfusion or another operation.
7. Fluid accumulation (seroma) under the skin, requiring drainage.

- Complications of Uterine Dilation & Curettage (D&C)

1. Infection spread.
2. Negative reactions to anesthesia.
3. Adhesions inside the uterus.
4. Heavy bleeding.

These complications highlight the importance of monitoring patients closely, following infection control protocols, and taking preventive measures to minimize risks.
