- Definition

It is the lack of oxygen reaching the lungs. In this case, the injured person must be transferred to the hospital as soon as possible and first aid must be given until he is transferred

- Reasons

1- Inhalation of toxic gases such as butane gas
2- Drowning in cases of water entering the trachea
3- Strangulation or hanging in cases of suicide
4- Foreign body aspiration into the trachea, especially in children and the elderly
5- Diaphragmatic paralysis in children
6- Diphtheria of the throat

- Symptoms

1- Cyanosis of the face

2- Inability to speak
3- Inability to breathe, and in severe cases, respiratory arrest
4- Loss of consciousness in some situations

- First aid for these cases

• The cause is removed immediately.
• In cases of gas asphyxiation, open the windows to allow fresh air in, close the gas valve, then loosen and remove the pressure bandage from the neck, chest, and abdomen.
• In cases of hanging or strangulation, immediately untie the rope or strap around the neck.
• Remove any foreign object from the mouth, especially in children or the elderly, if it is the cause of suffocation.
• Start artificial respiration in cases of respiratory arrest or in case of suffocation caused by diphtheria, which may cause paralysis of the throat muscles as first aid, then transfer the patient immediately to the hospital.
