Cricothyrotomy is an emergency surgical procedure in which an airway is created through an incision in the cricothyroid membrane, the membrane between the cricoid and thyroid cartilages in the larynx
This procedure is used in emergency situations where the airway is blocked or inaccessible by conventional intubation methods. It is considered a last option to maintain breathing in critical cases
The emergency (ER) department is the place where critical and urgent cases are immediately addressed, making cricothyrotomy a procedure performed in this department in certain situations such as:
• It is resorted to when traditional endotracheal intubation is not possible due to: upper airway obstruction caused by injury, inflammation, or severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis).
• Severe injuries affecting the face or neck, making it impossible to access the trachea through the mouth.
• Swelling of the larynx due to severe allergies or infections causing complete airway obstruction.
A Cricothyrotomy requires precision and speed. This procedure is performed by a medical team trained in emergency surgical procedures and includes the following steps:
➡️Determine the appropriate location: the cricothyroid membrane
➡️Disinfect the area: using disinfectants
➡️Incision: A small horizontal incision is made in the membrane to access the airway
➡️Insertion of a breathing tube: After the incision is made, a tube or catheter is inserted to ensure that air continues to flow into the lungs
➡️ Anaphylaxis It is a severe allergic reaction that leads to swelling of the larynx and obstruction of the airway
➡️ Acute head and neck injuries which prevent normal intubation
➡️ Severe burns in the mouth or neck that cause narrowing or blockage of the airway
Tumors: that completely block the upper airway
A Cricothyrotomy is a medical intervention performed as a last resort to save a patient's life. Although endotracheal intubation is preferred in most cases, a Cricothyrotomy is performed in cases where this option is impossible or ineffective. This procedure is regularly trained in hospitals to ensure that doctors are able to perform it quickly and efficiently in an emergency
