- Post-operative nursing procedures

Proper nursing care after surgery is essential to ensure patient safety and promote recovery. Here are the key steps followed by the nursing team:

1. Continuous Monitoring

  • Vital Signs: Regularly monitor pulse, blood pressure, temperature, and respiratory rate.
  • Consciousness & Responsiveness: Assess the patient's level of awareness and interaction.

2. Pain Management

  • Evaluate pain levels using appropriate scales.
  • Administer pain relievers as needed and document accordingly.

3. Wound Assessment

  • Regularly inspect the surgical site for signs of infection such as redness, swelling, or abnormal discharge.
  • Change dressings as per the doctor’s instructions.

4. Complication Prevention

  • Monitor vital signs for signs of shock or blood clots.
  • Encourage deep breathing exercises to improve circulation and prevent pneumonia.

5. Nutrition

  • Assess the patient's ability to eat and drink.
  • Provide light, appropriate meals based on medical recommendations.

6. Psychological Support

  • Offer emotional support and counseling to the patient and family.
  • Explain what to expect during the recovery period.

7. Health Education

  • Provide guidance on wound care, prescribed medications, and follow-up importance.
  • Educate the patient on warning signs such as severe pain or unusual swelling.

8. Encouraging Mobility

  • Assist the patient in sitting up and moving as soon as possible.
  • Promote light exercises to prevent blood clots and improve circulation.

9. Follow-Up Scheduling

  • Ensure that postoperative appointments with the doctor are scheduled.

Each patient requires individualized care, so these procedures should be tailored based on the patient’s needs and the type of surgery performed.
