- Definition

Laminitis (Aseptic pododermatitis) is an inflammation and damage and of the tissue between the hoof and the underlying coffin bone (distal phalanx, P3), the failure of the attachment between the distal phalanx (coffin bone) and the inner hoof wall. The terms "laminitis" and "founder" are used interchangeably. However acute laminitis refers to symptoms associated with a sudden initial attack, including pain and inflammation of the laminae. Whereas founder usually refers to a chronic (long-term) condition associated with rotation of the coffin bone.
