- Introduction

Bronchial asthma is one of the most common chronic respiratory diseases worldwide and across Egypt, affecting adolescents and adults. It is characterized by chronic airway inflammation and variable airflow limitation, and, although it cannot yet be cured, it is highly treatable: with appropriate ICS-containing therapy, education and follow-up, the great majority of patients can achieve good symptom control and avoid exacerbations. Uncontrolled asthma, by contrast, remains an important and largely preventable cause of emergency visits, hospital admissions, lost schooling and work, and occasional death. The purpose of these guidelines is to make consistent, evidence-based asthma care achievable at every level of the Egyptian health system.
