Introduction to Cardiovascular Diseases

Introduction to Cardiovascular Diseases (CVDs)

  • Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide.
  • In 2019, approximately 17.9 million people died from cardiovascular diseases, representing 32% of total global deaths. Of these, 85% were due to heart attacks and strokes.
  • More than three-quarters of deaths from cardiovascular diseases occur in low- and middle-income countries.
  • Cardiovascular diseases accounted for 38% of premature deaths (under 70 years) out of 17 million deaths from non-communicable diseases in 2019.
  • Most cardiovascular diseases are preventable by addressing behavioral and environmental risk factors, such as smoking, poor diet, obesity, physical inactivity, harmful alcohol use, and air pollution.
