- Shoulder preparation for surgery
Steps
The anesthesiologist turns the patient’s head away
from the area to be prepared.
Remove the patient’s clothing
and
adjust the blanket
to expose the surgical site.
Place a sterile drape over the clothing and blanket
, folding the edge over the
non-sterile part
.
Raise the arm upward
and
slightly lift the shoulder off the table
.
Place a sterile towel or drape under the shoulder and armpit
for proper coverage.
Prepare the Following Areas:
The upper arm
(from the shoulder
down to just below the elbow
).
The base of the neck up to the top of the shoulder
.
The scapula (shoulder blade)
.
The chest area down to the midline
.
The entire upper arm
to ensure a sterile surgical field.
